Think about a time that you went to the dentist.

“Ough! My tooth hurts!” I shouted. My mom told me to put on my coat on that chilly October morning. We were going to the dentist. She had made an appointment because I was complaining about one of my back teeth. As we walked out the door, my hands grabbed a bag of ice to hold on my jaw. The cold helped a little bit, but my whole mouth still throbbed.
Every time we hit a bump in the road, my toothache blasted my
mouth with pain. "Ugh!" I moaned. Finally, Mom opened the door to the dentist
office. She pointed me to a chair in the corner while she talked to the nurse.
In a few minutes, the nurse took me back to a room down a long hall. The
nurse
patted me on the back and asked me to sit in the reclining chair in
the middle of the room. The chair felt slick and soft. My head
leaned back. A large mirror on the ceiling frowned back at me.
Suddenly,
footsteps came closer. “I hear you’re having one of
those achy-breaky days?” Dr. Brown chuckled as he came in the room.
I didn’t think he was very funny, but I laughed a little just the same. He tilted
my head back and asked me to open my mouth. “Say AHHHH!” he prompted.
I closed my
eyes as he looked at my teeth.
In a flash, one last big pain rushed through my jaw. Dr. Brown gave me a shot. The shot hurt a little, but my mouth started to get numb quickly. Suddenly, the side of my mouth felt all puffy. For about thirty minutes, Dr. Brown whistled while he worked on my molar. DRILL, WHEEEEE, DRILL!
After the drilling stopped, they tilted up the chair and removed my napkin. Mom smiled as I walked back out into the waiting room. The nurse smiled too, but I wasn’t smiling. My jaw was numb. My tummy growled. Dr. Brown came around the corner and handed me a yellow plastic bag. All at once, my eyes sparkled. Inside the bag were a toothbrush and toys. I felt better. This trip to the dentist wasn’t so bad after all. Next time I see Dr. Brown though, I hope it’s only for a check-up or cleaning.
